Gallery Watch: FiveMyles

Make sure FiveMyles Gallery (558 St Johns Place) is on your radar, if it’s not already. Neighborhood artist, Erin Gleason, raved about the space when we met during the GO Open Studio weekend in September and since then I’ve been keeping tabs on its many events.

Erin hooked me by describing an exhibition she hosted there, which brought “stoop culture” indoors. For the exhibition, To Gather,  she created several “stoops,” as big and heavy as the one outside your door, and transported them to the gallery along with a pulpit and barbershop chair. Once inside, visitors could hang on the stoops and interact with people they may never bump into on their own street.

What’s cool about FiveMyles is that it’s not strictly an art gallery; it’s a community space. In the summer, between scheduled exhibitions, FiveMyles opens it’s doors to planned and impromptu neighborhood performances. I hope to catch one of these once it’s a bit warmer out … Until then, there’s An N’ Pale, a Haiti Cultural Exchange January 18 at 6 pm.
