2012 In Review: Brooklyn Museum Spotlights Crown Heights Artists

IMG_2763Step aside Bushwick, art is thriving in Crown Heights! The Brooklyn Museum made that clear in 2012.

Two of the five Brooklyn-based artists selected for the museum’s GO exhibit live and work here. That’s a huge deal since 1,708 artists in 44 neighborhoods throughout the borough participated in the GO Open Studio Weekend, September 8-9.

For two days, artists played host/hostess for anyone interested in learning about their work. Some rearranged their apartments, tucking personal keepsakes and photos into closets as they transformed their living rooms into gallery spaces, while others welcomed onlookers into their studios with paint-coated floors and cluttered tables.

I attended several open studios in Crown Heights (posts on these to come), but missed out on GO winners: Gabrielle Watson and Naomi Safran-Hon. I did get to see their art on display at the museum when the exhibit opened December 1 and it’s definitely worth checking out, if you haven’t already. The GO exhibit runs through February 24.

For info about how artists were selected, studio locations and other details about the GO Open Studio Project, read on here .
